Water fountains, rated with total seriousness

The Fountain of Youth

It looks like a guy rating water fountains. It is. But every score is secretly a lesson about life, and water was always the secret.

The Meaning

“Pressure isn’t power. Aim is.”

Everybody wants more pressure. More hustle, more volume, more force. This fountain had all the power in the world and still missed the one thing it was built to hit. Energy with no aim is just a mess on the floor. Staying young isn’t about pushing harder. It’s knowing where you’re headed, easing off just enough, and landing it every single time.

Which fountain are you?

Five questions. Jarvis does the rest. Results are final and slightly personal.

      The Fountain Index

      Reviewed. Scored. Applied to life.

Pressure, temperature, arc, knob and vibe, each out of ten. Then the part that matters. How we rate ↓

      Methodology // Declassified

      How we rate.

Five readings. One verdict. Zero sponsors.

      1. 01 // Pressure

Measured by eye, confirmed by face. Too little and you are kissing metal. Too much and you are wearing it. The ideal stream meets you halfway.

      2. 02 // Temperature

Cold is the goal. Room temperature is a warning. Warm is a confession. If the critic could not confirm it, it stays unconfirmed. He does not guess with his mouth.

      3. 03 // Arc

The geometry of generosity. A good arc lands where your mouth already is. A great one makes you feel it was expecting you.

      4. 04 // Knob

Button, lever, push bar or sensor. Scored on effort, feedback, and whether it sticks. A fountain that fights you has already lost.

      5. 05 // Vibe

Setting, light, the line behind you, the hum of the building. Completely unscientific. Weighted heavily anyway.

The overall is not an average.

Averages are how you end up with a 6 that drinks like a 4. The critic weighs the readings, takes one more sip, and decides. Then he writes the lesson, which is the real score.

Hors concours French for “outside the competition.” A fountain so good it is retired from the category awards so the others have something to play for. Current count: one. The Masterpiece.

      • 9.5+Hall of Fame. You will mention it for twenty years.
      • 8.0+Worth a detour.
      • 6.0+Honest work. Drink and move on.
      • 4.0+Survivable.
      • <4.0Hydration of last resort.

House rules: every real fountain was found, photographed or filmed on site by a real person. Samples are labeled as samples. Scores are final until they are not. The critic accepts no gifts, which is easy, because fountains are free. That is the whole point.
